about

Vulture Street Tape Gang is comprised of synth-lord Mike Medleycott, drum-lord Myka Wallace and the vocal and instrumental talents of one Lachlan James Mitchell. In 2013 on a sexy night in Brisbane the band took a new creative direction at the drunken wake of Mike and Lachlan’s barbershop vocal project the Melatonins. At a funeral hall, their penchant for the classic American songbook and clean cut harmonic order got hit with a wrecking ball of intuitive force.

The gang approaches the multiverse of sound creation with the same freedom that the cool punks from those VHS space adventure flicks did when battling aliens back in the day. No rules and no curfews, just upturned collars, groovy talent and the potential to expand upon a treasure of an idea that will live and die within the moment. A percussive free jazz wig out or a blistering synth death wave enjoy glorious impermanence to make room for the baiting of new ideas into existence. And for this tape gang the ideas are endless.

After releasing a series of beat tapes (Mixtape #3, Hung Phat Jewelry, State High, Mick’s Nuts) to chart the fluctuations in the freak tendencies of Brisbane’s West End, and jumping off from the infectious hedonism of their single “1st World Problems Solved” (shout out Hannibal Burres), Vulture Street Tape Gang deliver the mature album Mature Themes for Childish People.

Produced by Hiatus Kaiyote's Paul Bender and Vulture St Tape Gang
Gilles Peterson has kissed the Vulture St ring in 2017, adding First World Problems to Brownswood Bubblers Comp.12, yet the band remain an anomaly, split between Brisbane (to where they owe their band namesake) and Melbourne, they have remained 100% improvisational live, no two shows the same. Paradoxically, this record is full of songs, weird wonderful songs.
Lead singer Lachlan Mitchell aka Laneous is at his most vulnerable and tumbles through the love arc of lusty songs to the annihilation of heartbreak. Amongst features from Cazeaux O.S.L.O, Rui da Cruz, Ha Na there are kooky rap songs about cunnilingus, ouija board RnB odes to D'Angelo and tropical tinged woozy tales of spaceship seduction.

Flitting between oddball neo-soul, cosmic raps and self-depreciating party jams, Mature Themes For Childish People is exactly what the title says, listening discretion is advised.
